At IBC2026 in Amsterdam, Jon Haley, Chief Revenue Officer at Scalstrm, has a chat with Julian Clover of Broadband TV News to explain how Scalstrm is pushing channel density to a new level.
The starting point is a request Scalstrm hears from every customer. As Jon puts it, they want to “get basically more from less.” Streaming operators are under pressure to cut costs while keeping broadcast quality and full functionality.
Scalstrm’s answer is a combination. NETINT’s video processing units (VPUs) handle the decoding, scaling and encoding. Scalstrm’s cloud-native software handles the broadcast side: balancing the workload across hundreds or even thousands of simultaneous channels and recovering from errors on the fly. Together they deliver 110 broadcast-grade HD channels from a single 1U server.
Jon explains why the step change is happening now. Software keeps getting more efficient, and dedicated chips built purely for video processing are reaching the market. Pay-TV operators with hundreds of channels are the obvious audience, but broadcasters are also under pressure to offer more, from pop-up channels to minor leagues and weekend matches. For them, the setup means they can “very quickly light up new channels, very low cost, broadcast quality.”
The platform runs in the cloud, in hybrid setups or on-prem, depending on how each broadcaster wants to deploy it.
Jon also looks at what comes next, including work with NETINT on the next generation of VPUs, support for new codecs and AI optimisation to keep driving costs down.
